Touwsberg Game Reserve is situated in the succulent Karroo 40km east of Barrydale along the scenic "Route 62". It is unusual in that it contains many geographical features which allow it to support a rich biodiversity. This includes a spring which feeds a permanent stream which supports the biodiversity. A variety of antelope have been re-introduced to the reserve within the carrying capacity of the land. These include Gemsbok, Giraffe, Cape Mountain Zebra, Eland, Kudu, Bontebok and Springbok.
Our remote stone cottage is situated deep in the heart of the Reserve. It is off the grid and totally private. The surrounding land is untouched and pristine. The cottage has two single beds in a loft and a queen size bed in the main bedroom, with views over the distant koppies. Water is pumped from an underground spring, with the use of solar energy. The cottage contains an indoor bath and outside shower, as well as a bath up the side of a hill with beautiful views. There is also a small plunge pool outside the cottage. The kitchen is well equipped, with a gas stove top and a 90L gas fridge. A circular hiking trail is under construction, and already offers 45 minutes' walk with spectacular views all around.
There is also a small campsite with outside shower, flush toilet and small kitchen (equiped with sink, running water, gas two plate stove, pots/pans/kettle and small camp table). Two sites under shade provide space for two 3X3 size tents, accommodating a maximum of 6 people (by special request only).
Visitors have access to the whole reserve, with hiking, cycling, 4X4 driving and game viewing as the most popular activities on offer.
The drive to Touwsberg from Cape Town is also beautiful, along the R62, or via Swellendam and the famous Tradouw Pass over to Barrydale. It takes roughly 4 hours to get to our cottage from Cape Town.
